Only Three Working Days Between China’s Holidays: What Rail Shippers Should Confirm Now

Published September 11, 2026 · Sino-Euro Railway

A running train does not guarantee your cargo can join it. Confirm each step before Golden Week, from collection in China to delivery in Europe.

2026 holiday dates and your next action

China’s Mid-Autumn holiday runs from 25 to 27 September 2026; the National Day holiday runs from 1 to 7 October. Only 28–30 September falls between them. Rail services may operate during the holidays, but collection, warehouse acceptance, documents and European delivery require separate confirmation. For critical cargo, aim to complete the key preparations on 21–24 September where feasible; this is an internal planning recommendation, not an operator’s cut-off.

“Will trains run during Golden Week?” is a useful opening question. For an individual shipment, however, the decisive questions are more specific: can the supplier release the goods, will the warehouse accept them, are the documents ready, and is there a confirmed departure that fits the delivery plan?

A train operating during the holiday does not mean unprepared cargo can join it at short notice.

Do not treat the three-day interval as spare capacity

Only 28–30 September separates China’s 2026 Mid-Autumn and National Day holidays. Check whether suppliers will work throughout that interval rather than assuming their schedules match the official calendar. Official holiday notice

Inspection, palletisation, consolidation and document corrections can each consume part of that interval. Work backwards from the receiving and documentation requirements of the actual service, with the key confirmations in place before Mid-Autumn where possible.

Historical operations are evidence—not a current service guarantee

In its report dated 10 October 2025, Xuzhou Land Port Group recorded 434 TEU of China–Europe rail cargo consolidated and dispatched during the holiday period, supported by round-the-clock staffing. This demonstrates that holiday operations are possible. It does not establish the 2026 arrangements of every terminal or service. Xuzhou Land Port Group

Cargo receiving, consolidation, loading, documentation and the departure plan still require shipment-specific confirmation.

Five confirmations before booking

1. Does the cargo-ready date include everything needed for collection?

Production completion may not include inspection, packing, labelling or loading preparation. Confirm that the goods can physically be collected, final quantities and measurements are available, and any special handling requirements have been reviewed.

2. Are both collection and warehouse acceptance confirmed?

A truck booking alone is not enough. Obtain confirmation from the receiving warehouse as well. For shipments collected from several suppliers, establish whether one late batch would hold up the entire consolidation.

If only part of the order is ready, compare the cost of separate handling with the delay caused by waiting for everything.

3. Have the required documents been checked—not merely submitted?

Review invoices, packing lists, declaration information and the cargo documents requested by the operator. Confirm acceptance conditions for special cargo before booking.

Ask which outstanding issue, if any, could prevent the next operational step. “Documents sent” and “documents accepted” are different milestones.

For China–Europe FCL and LCL rail freight, confirm whether the quoted plan depends on a full-container handover or a consolidation schedule; the relevant cut-offs may differ.

Prepare the commercial invoice and packing list for the customs clearance process before the responsible staff leave for the holiday; resolve discrepancies while suppliers are still available.

4. Is the departure a confirmed service or an indicative date?

“Expected to leave at month-end” is not a complete delivery plan. Confirm the origin terminal, departure accepted by the operator, cargo and document cut-offs, and the available fallback if the plan changes.

Also clarify the scope of the quoted transit time. Terminal-to-terminal time should not be presented as door-to-door time without adding collection, consolidation, customs and final delivery.

5. Who will manage the European handover?

Arrival at a rail terminal is not delivery to the customer. Confirm customs documentation, onward transport, receiving appointments and the person authorised to provide missing information during the Chinese holiday.

For each shipment, the plan should identify its current location, next action, responsible party and completion time.

A door-to-door rail delivery plan should include the European handover, customs arrangements and receiving appointment, not just the train’s arrival date.

When is a switch from ocean to rail worth assessing?

Rail is a potential alternative, not an automatic solution to every missed sailing. Check three conditions together:

• The cargo is ready, or has a credible near-term ready date.

• A suitable route and confirmable departure are available for its cargo type, dimensions and packaging.

• The time saved has enough value to justify the additional door-to-door cost.

For example, an industrial-parts order could be divided into the quantity needed to maintain production and the balance required for later replenishment. Different modes can then be compared for each portion. This is a planning example, not confirmation of capacity or cargo acceptance.

Build the plan before making the delivery promise

For critical shipments, set an internal target to complete collection, cargo handover and documents during 21–24 September where feasible. Earlier operator deadlines take precedence. Do not leave every unresolved task for 28–30 September.

If readiness or capacity remains uncertain, revise the delivery expectation before committing to dispatch. Decide whether to retain the route, split the order or use an alternative based on what can actually be executed.
