Container types on the China–Europe rail

Three box types cover almost all rail freight from China. A 20-foot standard container (20'ST) offers about 33 CBM of internal volume and suits dense, heavy cargo — payload is typically capped near 28 tons by rail weight limits. A 40-foot standard container (40'ST) doubles the floor space to about 67.6 CBM with a typical payload of 26–28 tons. A 40-foot high cube (40'HQ) adds roughly 30 cm of internal height for about 76 CBM — the default choice for most general merchandise.

Weight versus volume: which limit bites first

Light, bulky cargo "cubes out" — it fills the container long before reaching the weight limit. Dense cargo (machinery, metal parts, tiles) weighs out first. On LCL shipments, charges follow the greater of actual weight and volumetric measure, so accurate dimensions at booking prevent re-billing surprises.

FCL or LCL: where is the break-even?

LCL consolidation accepts cargo from as little as 1 CBM, which makes rail practical for small and mid-size importers. Once a shipment reaches roughly 13–15 CBM, a dedicated 20-foot container usually becomes the more economical choice — and it removes de-consolidation handling at destination. Between 1 and 13 CBM, LCL almost always wins on cost.

Pallets and loading

A 40'ST or 40'HQ holds roughly 23–25 Euro-pallets (120 × 80 cm) in a single layer; a 20'ST holds about 11. Rail containers ride thousands of kilometres with shunting impacts, so cargo must be lashed and blocked — uneven loading is the most common cause of border re-work.

What actually fits — typical loads

A 40'HQ comfortably swallows a full production run of consumer goods: roughly 55–60 standard washing machines, several thousand cartons of apparel, or the complete parts kit for a small assembly line. E-commerce sellers usually consolidate cartons from many suppliers into one LCL booking; industrial shippers fill FCL boxes with palletized components. Rail applies stricter cargo rules than ocean freight.
