How Much Cargo Can a China-Europe Railway Container Carry?

Usable container capacity is the load that fits safely within the actual equipment, cargo and route limits. A nominal cubic-metre figure alone cannot confirm that a shipment will fit or be accepted.

Which limit applies first?

Check the container’s marked maximum gross mass and tare weight, the permitted payload, and the operator’s route restrictions. The IMO/ILO/UNECE CTU Code is the reference for packing and securing; verify the actual equipment before loading. Do not treat a generic “26–28 tonnes” estimate as an approved payload.

Why can cargo fit by volume but not in practice?

Door clearance, package dimensions, pallet layout, load distribution and securing space affect usable capacity. Non-stackable, fragile or irregular cargo may leave substantial empty space. Confirm stackability and permissible orientations with the supplier rather than assuming every carton can be stacked.

How should you compare 20-foot, 40-foot and high-cube equipment?

Use the equipment specification and a packing plan for the actual packages. Larger internal volume does not mean a higher permitted payload, and availability depends on the booked service. There is no fixed count of machines or pallets that fits every container.

FCL or LCL for a partial load?

Compare full-container and shared-container services using the complete shipment cost. A fixed 13–15 CBM break-even rule is not reliable across routes and cargo types. Include origin handling and destination release, not just the rail leg.

What is needed to check a load plan?

Send the packing list with external dimensions, gross weight per package, package count, stackability and any handling restrictions. Also provide the ready date and delivery postcode.
