What is FCL & LCL on Rail Freight ?

FCL means booking a container for your shipment; it does not have to be completely full. LCL means sharing container space with other shipments. The right choice depends on packing, handling and the complete delivery price, not a universal volume threshold.

What changes between FCL and LCL?

With FCL, your goods are not consolidated in the container with unrelated shippers’ cargo. With LCL, goods are received, consolidated and separated at designated facilities. Check the receiving cut-off and onward collection arrangements for the actual service. The train journey is only one part of the schedule.

Which costs should you compare?

Ask for offers covering the same origin and delivery point. Confirm collection, consolidation or deconsolidation, rail transport, customs service, terminal handling and delivery. Duties, taxes, storage and inspection charges must be identified separately where applicable. A rail-only reference rate is not an all-inclusive door-to-door price.

There is no automatic rule that a particular number of cubic metres makes FCL cheaper. Request both options when size, fragility or delivery timing makes the comparison worthwhile. See our FCL and LCL service scope and door-to-door delivery planning.

What should you send for a quote?

Provide cargo description, package count, dimensions of each package, gross weight, stackability, collection and delivery locations, and ready date. Identify batteries, liquids or special handling before booking; acceptance requires confirmation.

Does LCL always arrive with FCL?

Not necessarily. Consolidation, release and final delivery can differ even when cargo uses the same train. Check the destination handover using the European hub guides and request a shipment-specific schedule.
