Rail freight from China to Belgium leaves Chinese territory through the Alashankou or Khorgos crossings in Xinjiang, where containers are transhipped from standard gauge to broad gauge at the Kazakh border — at Dostyk (opposite Alashankou) or Altynkol (opposite Khorgos). Trains then run along the northern Eurasian corridor — through Kazakhstan, Russia and Belarus — to the European Union's eastern rail gateway at Brest/Małaszewicze, where containers are transhipped back to standard gauge for the final leg into Belgium.

Belgian customs clearance in practice
The consignee needs an EU EORI number. Businesses established in the EU apply in their country of establishment (in Belgium via the Belgian Customs and Excises administration (FPS Finance)); operators not established in the EU generally apply in the member state where they first carry out customs activities. An EORI issued by any member state is valid across the EU — if you already have one, you do not need to reapply for Belgium. An EORI is a customs identifier, separate from a VAT number. No EORI yet? Tell us early — import clearance cannot start without one.
Belgium’s standard import VAT rate is 21% (reduced rates of 6%/12% apply to some goods); duty rates follow your HS code in the EU TARIC — check Access2Markets. VAT-registered businesses can generally apply for an ET 14.000 licence to account for import VAT in their periodic VAT return instead of paying cash at clearance, subject to current conditions. Both options run on the same trains to Belgium. The right choice depends mainly on volume, cargo sensitivity and budget:
