Shipping decision summary — China to Switzerland
- Suitable cargo
- Precision machinery, electronics, instruments and high-value consumer goods — profiles where rail's balance of speed and cost beats both ocean and air; new energy vehicles with the required documents; chemical products only with a non-hazardous safety appraisal report. Not accepted: dangerous goods and loose lithium batteries.
- Route & nodes
- Departures from Xi'an, Chengdu, Chongqing, Zhengzhou, Yiwu, Wuhan and Guangzhou (other Chinese cities via feeder to the nearest hub, quoted separately). Switzerland is outside the EU customs union: cargo moves via the Małaszewicze gateway under EU transit (T1) and clears Swiss customs on arrival at Zurich; door-to-door delivery across Switzerland (Basel, Bern, Geneva, Lausanne) follows from there.
- Transit time
- Station-to-station 25-30 days. Door-to-station and door-to-door timing is confirmed per shipment, based on pickup address, consolidation, train departure, customs clearance and final delivery. No fixed number of days is added to rail transit.
- Departures
- Regular departures from the main Chinese origin terminals — Xi'an, Chengdu, Chongqing, Zhengzhou, Yiwu, Wuhan and Guangzhou — with departure days and cut-offs confirmed at booking.
- What the indicative rate covers
- The reference rate covers the rail leg station-to-station. Not included: pick-up from inland Chinese cities, EU import duties and VAT, final delivery, and cargo insurance — all quoted separately on request.
- Needs manual confirmation
- Chemical products, oversized or overweight pieces, exact pick-up cost from non-hub cities, and current FCL container availability.

We operate comprehensive rail freight services to Switzerland from China's rail hubs — Xi'an, Chengdu, Chongqing, Zhengzhou, Wuhan, Guangzhou and Yiwu — with supplier pick-up across the country: Shenzhen, Shanghai, Ningbo and other cities are served by truck feeder to the nearest rail hub. Both FCL (full container load) and LCL (less-than-container load) options are available.
Switzerland is outside the EU customs union, which makes documentation the critical part of this lane: we route cargo via the Małaszewicze gateway under transit (T1) through the EU and clear Swiss customs on arrival at Zurich. From there we deliver door-to-door across the country — Basel, Bern, Geneva, Lausanne.
Typical cargo includes precision machinery, electronics, instruments and high-value consumer goods — cargo profiles where rail's balance of speed and cost beats both ocean and air.

Main rail corridor from China to Switzerland — key border crossings and terminals.
FCL station-to-station quotations use COC (carrier-provided container included). SOC requires the actual container hire/use charge for the shipment; this cost varies. Pickup, clearance, taxes, delivery and insurance may be included or quoted separately: confirm the quotation breakdown.

Check indicative ratesMain border crossings & transit corridor
Rail freight from China to Switzerland leaves Chinese territory through the Alashankou or Khorgos crossings in Xinjiang, where containers are transhipped from standard gauge to broad gauge at the Kazakh border — at Dostyk (opposite Alashankou) or Altynkol (opposite Khorgos). Trains then run along the northern Eurasian corridor — through Kazakhstan, Russia and Belarus — to the European Union's eastern rail gateway at Brest/Małaszewicze, where containers are transhipped back to standard gauge for the final leg into Switzerland.
Małaszewicze in Poland is our primary European distribution hub: from here, containers reach most EU member states by rail or road feeder in about 1–4 days, depending on the destination and confirmed per shipment.
Transit times: station-to-station vs door-to-door
Station-to-station is the time between departure at the Chinese origin terminal and arrival at the destination terminal. Door-to-door adds pick-up at your supplier, export customs in China, import clearance and final delivery in Switzerland.
| Lane | Station to station | Door to door |
|---|---|---|
| China rail hubs → Zurich (LCL, via EU transit) | 25–30 days | Confirmed per shipment |
| FCL 40'HQ — all origins → Zurich | 25–30 days | Confirmed per shipment |

Customs documents for shipping to Switzerland
Our team prepares and checks the full documentation set for export from China and import into Switzerland:
- Commercial invoice
- Packing list
- Rail waybill (CIM/SMGS consignment note); CMR note for any road leg on door-to-door shipments
- Swiss import declaration — handled by our partner agents on arrival (no EU EORI required for Switzerland; the consignee needs a Swiss UID/VAT number)
- T1 transit document for movement through the EU, arranged by our team
- Certificate of origin when the buyer or customs regime requires one
Switzerland is outside the EU customs union: goods move under T1 transit through the EU and clear Swiss customs on arrival. We arrange both the transit document and the Swiss import entry.
Swiss customs clearance in practice
Switzerland is outside the EU customs union. Cargo moves via the Małaszewicze gateway under EU transit (T1) and clears Swiss customs on arrival at Zurich. The consignee needs a Swiss business identification (UID) number; EU-side transit formalities are handled by our terminal agents, and an EU EORI applies only within the EU. Tell us early if the consignee is not yet registered in Switzerland. (Checked September 2026.)
Switzerland's standard import VAT rate is 8.1% (reduced 2.6%, special 3.8% for accommodation); Swiss customs duties are generally weight-based in the Tares tariff — check the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (FOCBS/BAZG). VAT-registered businesses generally account for import VAT via their periodic VAT return, subject to current conditions.
Switzerland runs its own product conformity system; many CE-marked products are accepted for specific categories under mutual recognition, but some goods need Swiss-specific documentation or labelling. Check with us before booking.
Send us your HS code (or a product description) and we will confirm rail acceptability and the exact clearance requirements for Switzerland before you book.
Cargo restrictions on China–Switzerland rail
Most general cargo moves freely on the China–Europe rail corridor, but railway safety rules are strict and enforced at every border crossing:
- General merchandise: electronics, machinery, textiles, furniture, auto parts, consumer goods
- New energy vehicles (NEVs), with the required transport documentation
- Chemical products — only with a non-hazardous safety appraisal report issued before booking
- Dangerous goods of any class
- Loose lithium batteries or battery-powered products (other than NEVs as above)
- Cargo prohibited under export-control or sanctions rules on the transit corridor — we screen HS codes before acceptance
Not sure whether your product qualifies? Send us the HS code and a product description — we confirm acceptability before you book.
FCL vs LCL: which option fits your shipment?
Both options run on the same trains to Switzerland. The right choice depends mainly on volume, cargo sensitivity and budget:
Your goods travel in an exclusive 40'HQ container (≈68 CBM usable) at a flat rate: lower cost per CBM on larger volumes, fewer handlings and faster terminal release.
Your pallets share a consolidated container with other shippers and are de-consolidated at our European hub. You pay per CBM with a 1 CBM minimum — no need to fill a whole container.
Indicative rates cover the rail leg only. Pick-up, customs clearance, duties and taxes, final delivery and insurance are quoted separately as applicable.
FAQ: rail freight from China to Switzerland
How long does rail freight from China to Switzerland take?
Shipments reach Zurich in about 25-30 days station-to-station. Door-to-station and door-to-door timing is confirmed per shipment, based on pickup address, consolidation, train departure, customs clearance and final delivery. No fixed number of days is added to rail transit.
How much does rail freight from China to Switzerland cost?
Rates for this lane are quoted manually — send us your cargo details for a current offer. Final pricing depends on cargo details, pick-up address and the departure schedule — request a firm quote before booking.
What do I need for Swiss customs?
Switzerland is outside the EU customs union, so an EU EORI does not apply: the consignee needs a Swiss UID/VAT number. Goods move under T1 transit through the EU and clear on arrival — we arrange both the transit document and the Swiss import entry. Certain goods (for example CE-regulated products, chemicals or battery-powered items) require additional conformity or safety documents — we confirm the exact list for your cargo before departure.
Which Swiss terminals do you serve?
Zurich is our main arrival point. From there we deliver door-to-door across Switzerland, including Basel, Bern, Geneva and Lausanne.
Can you ship batteries or dangerous goods to Switzerland by rail?
We do not carry dangerous goods or loose lithium batteries. New energy vehicles are accepted with the required documentation, and chemical products only with a non-hazardous safety appraisal report issued before booking.
